Bangalore Airport Metro Blue Line: Latest Update

Bengaluru's long-awaited rail link to Kempegowda International Airport has crossed a major construction milestone. According to recent government data, the Namma Metro Blue Line project achieved 72% overall construction progress, with the 58.19-km corridor being developed at an estimated cost of ₹14,788 crore. Some officials have since pegged progress even higher, with the Namma Metro Blue Line reportedly 75% complete, and senior officials stepping up efforts to resolve pending issues and speed up construction.

The Blue Line will directly link Central Silk Board in south Bengaluru to Kempegowda International Airport, passing through key hubs such as KR Pura, Hebbal and Yelahanka. The corridor is split into two construction phases: Phase 2A covers Central Silk Board to KR Pura (19.75 km), while Phase 2B covers KR Pura to the airport via Hebbal and Yelahanka (38.44 km), together forming an elevated corridor with around 30 metro stations.

After missing several earlier deadlines, authorities have now reset the opening plan into three distinct stages rather than a single simultaneous launch. Greater Bengaluru Development Minister Krishna Byre Gowda has confirmed the Blue Line will open in three stages, aligning deadlines to on-ground complexity, with the Hebbal-Airport stretch planned by September 2027, while the KR Puram-Hebbal segment, the toughest, shifts into early 2028. As a result, the full corridor's completion date was pushed from December 2027 to March 2028, since the connecting KR Puram-Hebbal stretch via Nagawara, where Hebbal's four-track interchange with the future Orange Line is under construction, faces the most complex engineering challenges.

Delays have stemmed from several ground-level issues. Clearances are also needed along the Outer Ring Road in the Nagawara-Hebbal area, and these limitations are likely to have an impact on the progress of the construction, especially between Kempapura and Hebbal. Separately, the section near the Yelahanka IAF-airport terminal has also experienced delays, with the contractor asking for until March 2027 to finish the work. The pace of work has drawn public criticism as well, with Krishna Byre Gowda questioning BMRCL officials during a site inspection, asking, "Is building a metro pillar rocket science?"

To accelerate the remaining work, senior officials from BMRCL and the airport operator have stepped in directly. Namma Metro Managing Director P C Jaffer and a team of officials held a one-and-a-half-hour meeting with airport authorities, including BIAL Managing Director Hari Marar, to iron out coordination issues. As part of the work split, Bangalore International Airport Limited will construct the station buildings within the airport premises, including CCTV systems and check-in and check-out infrastructure, while BMRCL will handle the tracks, signalling and communication systems for stations outside the airport premises.

On the ground, trial runs are the next big milestone to watch. Officials have indicated that trial runs on the ORR section of Phase 2A could begin around October 2026, ahead of a phased commercial opening. For homebuyers and commuters, this means the Central Silk Board-KR Pura stretch is likely to see operational trains before the airport-bound sections further north.

For homebuyers, the Blue Line's progress carries real weight beyond commute times. Improved Metro connectivity is expected to boost residential and commercial demand in areas along the Blue Line, including KR Pura, Hebbal, Yelahanka and other northern Bengaluru micro-markets. Enhanced accessibility to the airport and major employment hubs is likely to support property values and encourage new housing developments around Metro stations, making this corridor one to watch closely over the next 18 months as construction milestones are met.
