Bengaluru Metro Pink Line: Opening Update

After years of shifting deadlines, Bengaluru's Namma Metro Pink Line is on the final stretch to opening. The 7.5-km elevated section between Kalena Agrahara and Tavarekere on Bannerghatta Road missed its August 15, 2026 target, but officials say the wait is nearly over. After months of delays, Bengaluru Metro's Pink Line has moved closer to passenger operations, with Development Minister Krishna Byre Gowda taking a trial ride on the 7.5-km Kalena Agrahara-Tavarekere stretch, which is now ready for inauguration.

Greater Bengaluru Development Minister Krishna Byre Gowda summed up the mood after the trial run: "The 7.5-km Kalena Agrahara–Tavarekere stretch of Bengaluru's Pink Line is ready for inauguration and will soon be open to the public. We are hopeful of receiving a date from the Government of India in September." Bengaluru South MP Tejasvi Surya added that BMRCL was targeting the inauguration by the end of September, adding that he and Gowda had urged officials to stick to the deadline.

On the regulatory front, the corridor has cleared most technical hurdles. The Research Design and Standards Organisation issued an interim speed certificate following successful oscillation trials and emergency braking tests, though statutory Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety approvals remain pending. Surya confirmed the remaining steps are moving fast: "Today morning, I spoke to Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety officials regarding safety clearances and timelines. Rolling stock approval is expected within the next 15 days, followed by clearance for the entire line."

Once operational, this first stretch will serve six elevated stations along Bannerghatta Road. The Pink Line runs from Kalena Agrahara (south Bengaluru, Bannerghatta Road) to Nagawara (north Bengaluru, Outer Ring Road), passing through Hulimavu, IIMB, JP Nagar, Jayadeva Hospital, Tavarekere, Dairy Circle, Langford Town, MG Road, Shivaji Nagar, Cantonment and Pottery Town. Commuters will also gain a direct interchange option, since the Pink Line will interchange with the Yellow Line at Jayadeva Hospital station and with the Purple Line at MG Road station.

The underground half of the corridor is running on a separate, longer timeline. The underground section is targeted for December 2026 — civil work and track-laying there are already complete, with systems installation underway. Taken together, the full Pink Line, extending approximately 21.25 km from Kalena Agrahara to Nagawara, is planned with an elevated and underground section and will have 18 stations, expected to strengthen Bengaluru's mass-transit network and ease traffic congestion along the heavily congested Bannerghatta Road corridor.

The Pink Line's progress fits into a bigger city-wide push. Greater Bengaluru Development Minister Krishna Byre Gowda reset Namma Metro timelines, with the 58-km Blue Line to Kempegowda International Airport now set to open in phases from mid-2027, with full operations targeted for March 2028. For now, though, Bannerghatta Road residents are watching the Pink Line most closely, since it stands to become the corridor's first mass-transit lifeline.

The metro's arrival is already reshaping how homebuyers view Bannerghatta Road. Analysts tracking the corridor note that properties within 1 km of stations already command a 10–15% premium, expected to widen to 15–25% once the line is fully operational. Broader price data backs this up: Bannerghatta Road flat prices currently average ₹9,650 per sq ft, ranging from ₹6,500 to ₹14,150 per sq ft across segments, up 47.3% in one year per 99acres data. Rental demand is set to follow suit, with metro-adjacent apartments expected to see a 15–25% rental increase once the Pink Line opens.

For homebuyers evaluating Bannerghatta Road, Sarjapur Road or other emerging Bengaluru corridors, the takeaway is straightforward: transit connectivity is now a measurable price driver, not just a convenience. As the Pink Line's first stretch prepares for launch and the underground section advances toward its December 2026 target, buyers who track official BMRCL and CMRS announcements will be best placed to time their purchase decisions around real, not rumoured, connectivity gains.
