Purple Line Metro Extension to Hoskote: Where the Project Stands Today

The Purple Line of Namma Metro is currently one of Bengaluru's busiest corridors. As of 2023, the line runs 43.49 km with 37 stations, from Challaghatta in the southwest to Whitefield (Kadugodi) in the east. For years, residents along Whitefield-Hoskote Road have asked for the network to be pushed further east, and 2026 has brought the clearest signals yet that this may actually happen.

Two separate developments are often confused with each other, so it helps to separate them. The first is a small, already-contracted works package: a 588-metre extension of the Purple Line beyond Whitefield across the Bengaluru-Chennai railway line up to Belatur Colony, intended purely to add a train reversal crossover facility with no new stations. This contract, worth around Rs 48.62 crore, was awarded to M Venkata Rao Infra Projects Pvt Ltd to help ease operational bottlenecks at the single-platform Whitefield terminus. It is an engineering fix, not a passenger extension to Hoskote.

The second, far bigger story is the proposed full-fledged extension into Hoskote town. BMRCL has designed a proposed 16.3-km double-decker corridor running from the KR Puram interchange along Old Madras Road (NH-75) to a terminus near Hoskote Government Hospital. The proposed station list includes KR Puram, ITI Bhavan, TC Palya Gate, Battarahalli Junction, Medahalli Junction, Avalahalli, Budigere Cross, Kattamanalur Gate flyover, Hoskote toll plaza, KEB Circle, and Government Hospital.

The rationale is traffic data, not just political intent. According to mobility data from the Department of Urban Land Transport (DULT), the Old Madras Road corridor has become one of the busiest travel routes in East Bengaluru. Discussions around the Hoskote metro also involve a double-decker format, where the structure may combine a metro line with an elevated road. If it goes ahead as designed, the metro could cut commute time between Hoskote and KR Puram from around 60 minutes down to just 20 minutes.

Where does the approval process stand? The feasibility study covers traffic, station locations, cost estimates, and sustainability aspects, and a Detailed Project Report (DPR) will only follow once this study concludes. As of May 2026, the project has cleared its initial feasibility evaluation, and BMRCL is moving into the DPR stage to freeze cost estimates, finalize structural designs, and seek funding clearances from state and central governments. Officially, the Bangalore Purple Line extension has not received final approval.

On timelines, sources diverge. Back in November 2023, the Karnataka government first announced plans to extend the Purple Line eastwards to Hoskote and westwards to Bidadi. Some trackers place this under the Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP), noting that as of 2026 the KR Puram to Hoskote metro extension remains in the feasibility study stage. More cautious estimates suggest actual ground-breaking may only begin around 2027-28, since BMRCL's resources are currently focused on the Blue Line airport corridor and Pink Line, with a realistic operational window between 2031 and 2032.

Whatever the exact date, the corridor is already reshaping how developers and buyers view Hoskote. Once a quiet satellite town, Hoskote is increasingly called the 'Neo-Whitefield', with the Satellite Town Ring Road (STRR) now operational and metro talk pushing demand for new projects to record levels. The corridor has already attracted developers launching integrated townships, and improved metro connectivity could further accelerate residential growth in East Bengaluru. Birla Estates already has an established footprint nearby with Birla Alokya on Soukya Road in Whitefield, and has an upcoming project in Hoskote itself, positioning the brand to benefit if the KR Puram-Hoskote line eventually moves from feasibility to construction.

For homebuyers, the practical takeaway is patience mixed with opportunity. This is still a pre-DPR, pre-approval proposal, so no construction date or station-wise fare structure exists yet. But infrastructure-linked micro-markets historically see the sharpest price gains in the years before, not after, a metro line opens — making the current feasibility stage a window worth watching closely rather than ignoring.

FAQs

Is the Purple Line metro extension to Hoskote confirmed?
Not yet. The proposed 16.3 km KR Puram-Hoskote corridor is still in the feasibility study stage, and a Detailed Project Report will follow only after this study concludes and receives government clearances.
Where does the Purple Line currently end?
The Purple Line currently terminates at Whitefield (Kadugodi) station, running 43.49 km with 37 stations from Challaghatta to Whitefield.
What is the small 588-metre extension beyond Whitefield about?
That is a separate, already-contracted works package to build a train reversal crossover track just past Whitefield station, purely to improve operations. It adds no new passenger stations and is not the Hoskote extension.
How many stations are proposed on the Hoskote extension?
The proposed alignment includes stations such as KR Puram, ITI Bhavan, TC Palya Gate, Battarahalli Junction, Medahalli Junction, Avalahalli, Budigere Cross, Kattamanalur Gate flyover, Hoskote toll plaza, KEB Circle, and Government Hospital.
What is the double-decker metro concept for this corridor?
BMRCL is studying a structure that combines the metro line with an elevated road on a single row of pillars, so the corridor can carry both vehicle traffic and trains along the same stretch of Old Madras Road.
How much will the extension reduce commute times?
If built as planned, the metro could cut travel time between Hoskote and KR Puram from around 60 minutes by road to roughly 20 minutes.
When is the Hoskote metro extension expected to open?
Estimates vary widely. Some reports point to construction starting around 2027-28 with operations by 2031-32, while other trackers had earlier suggested a 2030 target under Phase III plans. No confirmed date exists yet.
Does Birla Estates have projects near this corridor?
Yes. Birla Estates already operates Birla Alokya on Soukya Road in Whitefield, and has an upcoming project in Hoskote, both positioned along the broader Whitefield-Hoskote growth belt.
Should I buy property in Hoskote before the metro is approved?
Buying at the feasibility stage carries more uncertainty but often the best entry pricing, since infrastructure-driven appreciation typically accelerates once a DPR and funding are approved. Buyers should weigh this against the lack of a confirmed timeline.
Is Hoskote already connected to the metro network by other means?
Yes, even without a dedicated station, Hoskote is linked to Namma Metro through BMTC buses, autos, and cabs connecting to the Whitefield (Kadugodi) and KR Puram stations via NH-75.
