Four new corridors, one connected Pune - metro expansion reshapes the city's future.
Enquire NowPune's metro network is set for its biggest leap yet. In two separate Union Cabinet approvals through 2025, the Pune Metro Rail Project's Phase 2 has been cleared for a combined investment of roughly Rs 13,484 crore, covering four new corridors that will stretch the network deep into the city's fastest-growing suburbs. The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved the Pune Metro Rail Project Phase-2: Vanaz to Chandani Chowk (Corridor 2A) and Ramwadi to Wagholi/Vitthalwadi (Corridor 2B), as extensions of the existing Vanaz–Ramwadi corridor under Phase-1. This was followed months later by a second, larger sanction: the Union Cabinet has approved Line 4 (Kharadi–Hadapsar–Swargate–Khadakwasla) and Line 4A (Nal Stop–Warje–Manik Baug) under Phase-2 of the Pune Metro Rail Project.
The first pair of corridors, 2A and 2B, will span 12.75 km and include 13 stations, connecting fast-developing suburbs such as Chandani Chowk, Bavdhan, Kothrud, Kharadi, and Wagholi. Their estimated project cost is Rs 3,626.24 crore, to be equally shared by the Government of India, Government of Maharashtra, and external bilateral or multilateral agencies, with construction targeted for completion within four years.
The second approval is far larger in scale. Line 4 and Line 4A together spanning 31.636 km with 28 elevated stations will connect IT hubs, commercial zones, educational institutions, and residential clusters across East, South, and West Pune, at an estimated cost of Rs 9,857.85 crore, jointly funded by the central and state governments along with external agencies, with a five-year construction timeline. Combined, the two approvals push Phase 2's total sanctioned outlay to roughly Rs 13,484 crore across 44.4 km of new elevated track.
Ridership projections underline why this expansion matters. According to official estimates, daily ridership on Line 4 and 4A combined is expected to be 4.09 lakh in 2028, rising to nearly 7 lakh in 2038, 9.63 lakh in 2048, and over 11.7 lakh in 2058. Of this, the Kharadi–Khadakwasla corridor alone is projected to carry 3.23 lakh passengers by 2028, growing steadily as the city's population along the route expands.
Connectivity between lines is central to the design. The new lines will seamlessly integrate with operational and sanctioned corridors at Kharadi Bypass and Nal Stop (Line 2), and Swargate (Line 1), while also offering an interchange at Hadapsar Railway Station and future links toward Loni Kalbhor and Saswad Road. This kind of multimodal integration is what turns a metro line into a genuine daily-commute alternative rather than an isolated stretch of track.
On the ground, MahaMetro has already begun moving from paperwork to execution. Managing Director Shravan Hardikar recently outlined a phased rollout: the northern extension from PCMC to Bhakti Shakti Chowk is progressing well and we aim to complete it by December 2027, he said, while the southern Swargate–Katraj stretch is targeted for 2029. He added that Line 4, connecting Khadakwasla, Hadapsar, and Kharadi, has received approval and is currently under survey, with funding-agency appointment and tenders to follow.
The ambition doesn't stop at Phase 2. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has said that a 200-kilometre metro network will be developed in Pune in the coming years, considering the city's rapid growth, and instructed MahaMetro to prepare a comprehensive expansion plan. Current ridership trends support the push: the Pune Metro is receiving an encouraging response from citizens, with around 2.5 lakh passengers travelling daily, a number that touched nearly 5.75 lakh during the Ganeshotsav period.
For homebuyers, this expansion carries direct implications. Localities along the Line 4 alignment, such as Kharadi and Hadapsar, and the Manjri belt just off the Pune-Solapur Highway, stand to gain sharply improved connectivity to the city core and IT corridors. Birla Estates has already staked a presence in this growth corridor with Birla Evam, a landmark luxury apartment project by Birla Estates, set in Hadapsar Annexe, off Solapur Highway, Pune East, while its first Pune project, Birla Punya, sits in central Pune near Sangamwadi, within reach of the Corridor 2A alignment toward Chandani Chowk. As metro construction accelerates, established residential belts near these upcoming stations are likely to see sustained buyer interest over the next several years.
