Pune Metro Ridership Crosses 2.5 Lakh

Pune's metro network is no longer a fledgling transit option—it has become a daily habit for a growing share of the city's commuters. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis recently noted that the Pune Metro is receiving an encouraging response from citizens, with around 2.5 lakh passengers travelling daily, and during the festive season the numbers climbed even higher, with the number reaching nearly 5.75 lakh during the Ganeshotsav period, indicating the growing preference for metro travel among residents.

The momentum shows up clearly in monthly data as well. MahaMetro figures show Pune Metro recording its highest monthly ridership of the year in August, with a total of 74,24,433 passengers travelling by Metro during the month, marking an increase of nearly nine lakh passengers compared to July. On an average-day basis, the average daily ridership in August stood at around 2.39 lakh passengers, and the increased footfall also boosted Metro revenue, which touched ₹11.33 crore during the month.

Breaking this down by corridor, the Aqua Line continues to dominate. The Vanaz-Ramwadi corridor, or Aqua Line (Line 2), continued to lead in terms of passenger numbers, with as many as 40,48,025 passengers travelling on the corridor in August, accounting for 54.5% of the total Metro ridership. The Purple Line isn't far behind: the Swargate-Pimpri-Chinchwad corridor, or Purple Line (Line 1), recorded 33,76,408 passengers, contributing 45% to the total ridership, and generated around ₹5.38 crore in revenue.

Single-day numbers reveal just how much capacity the network is now absorbing. August 27 emerged as the busiest day for Pune Metro, with 2,65,064 passengers travelling on the network in a single day. On individual lines, the Purple Line recorded its highest single-day ridership of 1,28,756 passengers on August 15, while the Aqua Line recorded its highest daily ridership of 1,50,349 passengers on August 11.

This isn't a one-off spike—it's part of a steady upward trend that authorities want to accelerate further. Fadnavis has said that a 200-kilometre metro network will be developed in Pune in the coming years, considering the city's rapid growth, and has instructed Maha Metro to prepare a comprehensive project plan for the expansion. Closer to completion, the 11-kilometre stretch of the Shivajinagar-Hinjewadi metro corridor is set to be inaugurated soon, while the remaining 12 kilometres are expected to be completed shortly after—a route that runs directly through Pune's IT corridor and is likely to further reshape commuting patterns for thousands of working professionals.

For homebuyers, rising ridership numbers are more than a transit statistic—they're a proxy for how livable and connected different parts of Pune are becoming. Localities sitting along or near the Aqua and Purple Line corridors, as well as those anticipating the upcoming Hinjewadi extension, are seeing renewed interest from end-users and investors alike, since shorter, more reliable commutes directly influence where people choose to buy a home. As Pune's transit backbone expands from the current network toward a planned 200-km system, well-connected micro-markets across the city are positioned to benefit from both convenience and long-term appreciation.

Developers are already responding to this shift. Birla Estates entered Pune's residential market with Birla Punya in Sangamwadi, a project that taps into the city's growing appetite for well-planned, connectivity-focused housing. As metro ridership climbs and new corridors come online, projects positioned near existing or upcoming stations are likely to see sustained demand from commuters looking to cut down travel time without compromising on lifestyle.
