Mumbai Metro Line 5 Phase 1: Thane-Bhiwandi Launch Nears

Mumbai's Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has confirmed that Phase 1 of Metro Line 5, connecting Thane to Bhiwandi, is entering its final construction stretch. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority announced that Phase 1 of Metro Line 5 between Thane and Bhiwandi is 95% complete, with civil work for the Kapurbawdi to Dhamankar Naka stretch expected to see operations commence by December 2026. This marks a notable acceleration, since phase 1 was earlier slated to begin in 2027, however, the MMRDA is aiming to commence services earlier.

The first phase covers a compact but critical stretch of the larger corridor. Civil work for the Kapurbawdi to Dhamankar Naka stretch is 95% complete, and this initial phase includes seven stations and is targeted for operational service by December 2026. Once running, it will give Thane and Bhiwandi commuters a direct rail link that bypasses the congested Thane-Bhiwandi road corridor, one of the busiest in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.

Senior officials from MMRDA confirmed that the remaining civil infrastructure will be finalised by September, followed immediately by technical trials and the mandatory safety certification process. This sequencing — construction completion, then trial runs, then Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) clearance — is standard practice before any Indian metro line opens to the public, and it explains why the December 2026 date is being treated as a target rather than a guarantee.

The financial and planning scope of the broader Line 5 project has also expanded significantly this year. The Maharashtra Government's recent approval in April 2026 of the revised ₹18,131 crore plan has accelerated the final stretch of construction. Phase 2, linking Bhiwandi to Kalyan, remains at an earlier stage. The total length of this project is 24.9 km, of which work on phase 2 between Bhiwandi and Kalyan is yet to start. Planners are also reconsidering the alignment for this stretch: significant portions of the Bhiwandi-Kalyan leg are now being transitioned to underground sections to minimize the impact on local heritage sites and dense commercial zones. Officials reviewing the site have flagged that this decision could still influence the overall schedule. A local MLA who reviewed the ongoing work confirmed the timeline but noted that a decision on whether the Bhiwandi-Kalyan extension will be built underground or as an elevated stretch is still pending, which could affect the broader project schedule.

For daily commuters, the payoff is significant travel-time savings once the full line is operational. The metro will reduce current travel time by anything between 50% and 75%. It will also plug into the wider metro network: it will provide interconnectivity among the ongoing Metro Line 4 (Wadala to Kasarvadavli) and the proposed Metro Line 12 (Kalyan to Taloja), and with the existing Central Railway. Long-term ridership projections underline the scale of demand this corridor is expected to absorb, with daily usage approximated at 3 lakh+ passengers by 2031.

The timing is relevant for homebuyers evaluating the Thane-Bhiwandi-Kalyan belt right now. Improved connectivity typically feeds directly into residential demand along a corridor, and developers have been active in the area well ahead of the metro's opening. Birla Estates, for instance, has an established presence in Kalyan with Birla Vanya and a fast-selling recent launch in Thane — Birla Estates recorded a booking value of approximately ₹1,007 crores for its Birla Taranya residential project in Thane within three months of receiving RERA approval on February 3, 2026 — alongside newer, pre-launch developments closer to the upcoming Kalwa and Airoli micro-markets.

With final civil works nearing completion and safety certification the next major milestone, the Thane-Bhiwandi stretch of Metro Line 5 is one of the most closely watched infrastructure projects in the MMR this year.
