Kharadi Metro Extension: Pune's IT Corridor Gets Rail-Ready

Kharadi, Pune's sprawling IT and business district, is about to get double the metro connectivity. Two separate corridors under Pune Metro Phase-2 are now heading toward this eastern suburb, a rare instance of a single locality being targeted by two rail lines at once. The Union Cabinet has cleared both projects, and the Maharashtra government has followed up with its own administrative approvals, moving the plans from paper to pre-construction.

The first corridor, Line 2B, extends the existing Aqua Line from Ramwadi to Wagholi and Vitthalwadi. The Union Cabinet approved the Pune Metro Rail Project Phase-2, with two elevated corridors spanning 12.75 km and 13 stations, connecting fast-developing suburbs such as Chandani Chowk, Bavdhan, Kothrud, Kharadi, and Wagholi. The project is scheduled for completion within four years, with an estimated cost of Rs 3,626.24 crore, to be equally shared by the Government of India, Government of Maharashtra, and external bilateral/multilateral agencies. On the ground, this corridor runs through Viman Nagar and Kharadi Bypass before terminating near Wagholi, and travel time is expected to drop to 22 minutes from Ramwadi to Wagholi, saving up to 38 minutes over road trips.

The second, larger corridor is Line 4, connecting Kharadi directly to Khadakwasla via Hadapsar and Swargate. The Union Cabinet has approved Line 4 (Kharadi–Hadapsar–Swargate–Khadakwasla) and Line 4A (Nal Stop–Warje–Manik Baug) under Phase-2, together spanning 31.636 km with 28 elevated stations connecting IT hubs, commercial zones, educational institutions, and residential clusters across East, South, and West Pune. The project will be completed within five years at an estimated cost of Rs 9,857.85 crore, jointly funded by the Government of India, Government of Maharashtra, and external bilateral/multilateral funding agencies. In February 2026, the state government formalised its share of this funding. The Maharashtra government granted revised administrative approval for the Kharadi–Swargate–Khadakwasla line and the Nal Stop–Warje route, with the combined 31.6 km project estimated at Rs 9,857.85 crore, with the Union and state governments each contributing Rs 1,212 crore, and the remainder met through loans and other sources.

Both lines will meet Kharadi commuters at a common point. These lines will seamlessly integrate with operational and sanctioned corridors at Kharadi Bypass & Nal Stop (Line 2), and Swargate (Line 1). That interchange effectively turns Kharadi into a junction node on Pune's metro map rather than a spur-end suburb, a status upgrade that matters for daily commuters and property values alike.

On the construction front, Line 2B is moving faster since it's technically an extension of an already-operational line. Tenders for Ramwadi–Wagholi construction started in late 2025, with bids opening around January 2026, and work is set to begin in Q1 2026, split into a 4.8 km phase and a 6.8 km phase. Industry trackers are cautious on the full timeline though: full completion is targeted for 2029-2030 for the Ramwadi–Wagholi extension, with the 4-5 year build following tender awards and land acquisition. Line 4, being a larger greenfield stretch, is a touch behind. Pre-construction activities such as topographical surveys and detailed design consultancy are already underway.

The ridership numbers explain why the government is prioritising this corridor. Daily ridership on Line 4 and 4A combined is expected to be 4.09 lakh in 2028, rising to nearly 7 lakh in 2038, with the Kharadi–Khadakwasla corridor alone accounting for 3.23 lakh passengers in 2028, growing to 9.33 lakh by 2058. On the Line 2B side, the projected incremental daily ridership for the entire Line 2 is estimated at 0.96 lakh in 2027, rising to 2.01 lakh in 2037 and 2.87 lakh in 2047. A local property analysis puts the shift in plain terms for residents: once Line 4 opens, this becomes a direct ride with no interchange at all, which is a genuine preview of how much simpler Kharadi's connectivity gets once construction wraps up.

For homebuyers and investors tracking Kharadi, the takeaway is straightforward: this is not a single metro line but a two-pronged rail push into one of Pune's busiest IT catchments, home to EON Free Zone, World Trade Center, and dozens of business parks. Kharadi is a suburb located in the Eastern Metropolitan Corridor of Pune on the banks of the Mula-Mutha river that serves as a hub for information technology and business parks, and is rapidly developing in terms of residential and office projects. With two metro lines converging here and construction tenders already rolling out, the next 3-4 years will be a key window for anyone evaluating an early entry into Kharadi and its adjoining micro-markets like Manjri, Hadapsar Annexe, and Wagholi.
