95% complete, first trains targeted for December 2026 on the Kapurbawdi-Dhamankar Naka stretch.
Enquire NowCommuters on the Thane-Bhiwandi belt have a firm date to look forward to. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has confirmed that Phase 1 of Metro Line 5 between Thane and Bhiwandi is 95% complete, with services expected to begin by December 2026, easing congestion across the region. This timeline is notably ahead of earlier projections, as phase 1 was earlier slated to begin in 2027, however, the MMRDA is aiming to commence services earlier.
Phase 1 of the Orange Line, as Metro 5 is also known, covers the stretch from Kapurbawdi to Dhamankar Naka. The MMRDA is prioritising Phase 1, which stretches 12.20 km from Kapurbawdi to Dhamankar Naka, with this initial phase including seven stations and targeted for operational service by December 2026. Construction reports vary slightly by source and month, with one account noting Phase-I, covering a 12.7 km stretch with six elevated stations, is 93% complete, with track installation and architectural finishes currently underway — a reminder that final figures are being updated as work wraps up on the last few pillars and finishes.
Engineering milestones have kept pace with the deadline. In one recent operation, MMRDA teams erected two critical spans over the busy Majiwada Flyover, a stretch described by officials as especially challenging. According to MMRDA Metropolitan Commissioner Dr Sanjay Mukherjee, the team completed the task within just five hours during the night, ensuring minimal traffic disruption with the support of local authorities. Remaining civil work is now down to a handful of obstructions, and 97% of the structural work has been completed, with the remaining work on the pillar at Kapurbawdi and an obstruction of a building being cleared.
One wrinkle in the launch plan concerns the depot. Since the Kasheli car shed is still under construction on marshy land, a car shed will be built on marshy land at Kasheli, which will take six months to fill and two years to complete. To avoid delaying passenger service, MMRDA plans to run trains without waiting for the depot, using a stabling arrangement instead — testing will begin by September, and the first phase will start by December, with trains initially operated using the stabling route due to delays in the car shed work. Rolling stock is already being lined up, as in October, Titagarh Rail Systems Company was awarded a contract worth ₹2,481 crore to supply 22 metro trains, signaling, telecom, platform screen doors, and depot machinery.
The bigger picture for this corridor has also expanded significantly in 2026. Beyond Phase 1, the state has approved a much larger vision for the line. On April 22, 2026, the Cabinet Infrastructure Committee, chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and attended by Deputy CM Eknath Shinde, officially greenlit a massive expansion of the corridor, extending it well beyond the original Thane-Bhiwandi-Kalyan alignment. The officially sanctioned corridor will extend from Durgadi Naka through Kalyan, reaching directly into Ulhasnagar. The full network, once complete, will provide interconnectivity among the ongoing Metro Line 4 (Wadala to Kasarvadavli) and the proposed Metro Line 12 (Kalyan to Taloja), and with the existing Central Railway.
For daily commuters, the payoff is straightforward: faster journeys and less time stuck in Bhiwandi's notoriously congested roads. The MMRDA estimates the line will reduce the current travel time by anything between 50% and 75%. For homebuyers, the impact is already visible in market conversations. As one property analysis puts it, the Thane-Bhiwandi-Kalyan metro impact on property values comes down to Bhiwandi being one of the largest logistics and warehousing hubs near Mumbai, where thousands of people currently depend on roads to get around — a dynamic that changes once Line 5 opens.
For those tracking the corridor for investment, timing matters. Industry voices note that under-construction projects near Metro Line 5 let buyers enter before the December 2026 opening premium arrives, which has historically been the strongest window near Mumbai metro launches. With stations planned near Kapurbawdi, Balkum Naka, Kasheli and further along the Thane-Belapur belt, residential corridors around Kalwa, Airoli Junction and Kalyan stand to benefit most directly as connectivity firms up over the next year.
