Maharashtra Clears Revised Approval for Pune Metro Line 4 & 4A Construction

Pune's metro network has moved a step closer to its next phase of expansion. Following the Union Cabinet's sanction of Pune Metro Phase-2, the Maharashtra government has cleared the revised administrative approval required to formally kick-start construction on Line 4 and its spur Line 4A. The Union Cabinet has approved Line 4 (Kharadi–Hadapsar–Swargate–Khadakwasla) and Line 4A (Nal Stop–Warje–Manik Baug) under Phase-2 of the Pune Metro Rail Project. The state-level clearance now allows Maha-Metro to move from planning into on-ground execution.

The two corridors together represent one of the largest single additions to Pune's transit map. Line 4 will run from Kharadi to Khadakwasla via Hadapsar and Swargate, extending 25.52 kilometres with 22 elevated stations, while spur Line 4A, covering Nal Stop to Warje and Manik Baug, will add a further 6.12 kilometres with six elevated stations. Pune's urban transport network received a significant boost as the Union Cabinet approved two new corridors under Phase-2, adding a total of 31.636 km of elevated track and 28 stations in important residential, commercial, and institutional areas.

Connectivity is the biggest draw for commuters and homebuyers alike. These lines are a vital part of Pune's Comprehensive Mobility Plan and will seamlessly integrate with operational and sanctioned corridors at Kharadi Bypass & Nal Stop (Line 2), and Swargate (Line 1), while also providing an interchange at Hadapsar Railway Station and connecting with future corridors towards Loni Kalbhor and Saswad Road. This means a commuter from Kharadi's IT parks will eventually be able to reach Swargate, Hadapsar's industrial belt, or the Sinhagad Road residential clusters without switching to road transport.

On the funding and execution side, the numbers are substantial. The project will be completed within five years at an estimated cost of Rs.9,857.85 crore, to be jointly funded by the Government of India, Government of Maharashtra, and external bilateral/multilateral funding agencies. Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha-Metro) will execute all civil, electrical, mechanical, and system-related works, with pre-construction steps including surveys and design activities already in progress.

Ridership projections underline why the state pushed this approval through. Daily ridership on Line 4 and 4A combined is expected to be 4.09 lakh in 2028, rising to nearly 7 lakh in 2038, 9.63 lakh in 2048, and over 11.7 lakh in 2058, with the Kharadi–Khadakwasla corridor accounting for the larger share and the Nal Stop–Warje–Manik Baug spur rising from 85,555 to 2.41 lakh passengers over the same period.

For homebuyers, the real story is what happens along the route. Traversing Solapur Road, Magarpatta Road, Sinhagad Road, Karve Road, and the Mumbai–Bengaluru Highway, the project will ease congestion on Pune's busiest routes while improving safety and promoting green, sustainable mobility. Micro-markets along Phase-2 corridors have already started reflecting this shift in sentiment. Property consultants tracking the Ramwadi–Wagholi stretch of Line 2B note that experts think property prices here could jump by 20-25% because of the new connectivity, while prices in Kharadi are expected to grow by 11% as it becomes a stronger business hub. Similar upside is expected along the Hadapsar–Swargate–Khadakwasla belt once Line 4 construction visibly progresses.

This approval is also significant in the context of Pune's overall metro growth story. This is the second major addition to Phase-2, following the earlier approval of Line 2A and Line 2B, and with this new approval, the Pune Metro network will cross the 100 km mark — a scale that puts Pune among the country's fastest-expanding metro cities.

For buyers evaluating homes in Kharadi, Hadapsar, Magarpatta, Manjri, or the Sangamwadi–Swargate belt, this state approval is a concrete signal that the metro isn't just on paper anymore. Developers with an established presence in these micro-markets, including Birla Estates' ongoing projects in Sangamwadi and the Manjri–Hadapsar corridor, sit directly in the path of this upcoming connectivity upgrade.
