Pune Metro eyes Alandi next, promising faster commutes across the city's booming eastern belt.
Enquire NowEastern Pune's transit map could be redrawn soon. Following the Union government's approval of a Metro corridor between Ramwadi and Wagholi, momentum has been building for a further extension to Alandi, one of Maharashtra's most visited pilgrimage towns. The proposal would push Pune Metro's Aqua Line well beyond its current terminus, connecting the temple town to the city's rapid transit grid for the first time.
Under the sanctioned plan, the Metro network already extends up to Vishrantwadi, but that hasn't stopped local leaders from pushing harder. Although the sanctioned corridor already provides for connectivity up to Vishrantwadi, political representatives and residents are pressing for the route to continue to Alandi, arguing that it would strengthen public transport in the city's rapidly expanding eastern belt. The Union government's approval for the construction of a Metro corridor between Ramwadi and Wagholi has also led to discussions on a further extension up to Alandi, a prominent pilgrimage centre located nearly 20 km from Pune.
Pune's BJP MP has publicly backed the idea. During a public interaction in Vishrantwadi, Pune's BJP MP Murlidhar Mohol confirmed that he had taken up the matter with Maha Metro. "Alandi is a major pilgrimage destination. Extending Metro services to this town will not only benefit devotees but also improve overall connectivity for people in the surrounding areas," he was quoted as saying. Officials have signalled that groundwork is already underway. Officials have indicated that a feasibility study on the proposed link is expected to begin shortly.
Former corporator Anil Tingre, a long-time advocate for the link, has framed it as more than a pilgrimage connector. Tingre, who has consistently backed a Metro link to Alandi, emphasised its wider benefits — according to him, the alignment would not only connect Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad but also enhance access to the Lohegaon airport. Crucially, he's already worked to future-proof nearby infrastructure for the line. Tingre had earlier recommended adjustments to the design of the ongoing flyover and grade separator project at Vishrantwadi Chowk to ensure that the Metro's alignment is not obstructed in the future, and several meetings with the MP and civic officials have been held on this issue.
The Alandi push isn't happening in isolation — it's part of a much larger vision for Pune's transit future. A further 276 kilometers of High-Capacity Mass Transit Routes will connect District Court to Alandi and Wakad Chowk to Shewalewadi as part of a comprehensive 30-year integrated transport plan for Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad, and PMRDA, estimated at ₹1.26 lakh crore. This signals that Alandi connectivity has already found a place in the region's long-term planning documents, even as the metro-specific feasibility study remains pending.
Momentum has only grown through early 2026. In one recent meeting, a local MLA raised the idea directly with Maha Metro's leadership. In a bid to strengthen public transport and tackle rising traffic congestion, MLA Bapusaheb Pathare held a detailed meeting with MahaMetro Managing Director Shravan Hardikar to discuss the expansion of metro services in and around Pune. Another major proposal involved developing a metro corridor from Pune Airport to Alandi via Vishrantwadi. Separately, Pune Municipal Corporation's own City Improvement Committee has taken up similar demands. Corporators suggested extending the metro line from Yerawada towards Vishrantwadi, Alandi Road and further to Lohegaon airport, a demand linked to growing population density and traffic movement in these areas.
For homebuyers, the significance lies in what a confirmed Alandi corridor would do to property fundamentals along the route — Vishrantwadi, Dighi, Charholi, Moshi and Alandi itself. Improved rail access typically compresses commute times to Pune's core employment hubs and Pimpri-Chinchwad's industrial belt, a pattern already visible along the operational Vanaz-Ramwadi and Swargate-PCMC stretches. It's worth noting, though, that this remains a proposal stage project: a feasibility study, DPR, and multiple layers of state and central approval stand between today's announcements and an actual construction timeline — buyers should track official PMRDA and Maha Metro notifications rather than anecdotal claims.
Meanwhile, the rest of Pune's metro network continues to mature, which adds credibility to eastern extension plans. As of December 2025, the system consists of two lines with a combined length of 32.97 km, with a third line under construction. With Line 3 nearing completion and the Ramwadi-Wagholi stretch already approved, planners have both the appetite and the operational template to take the network further towards Alandi in the coming years.
