Pune Metro To Expand 200 Km

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has announced a major expansion of the Pune Metro network, one that will significantly alter how the city moves and where homebuyers choose to invest. Speaking at the inauguration of Metro Bhavan, the new administrative headquarters of Maha-Metro, Fadnavis said the state government plans to develop a 200-km metro network across Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad and the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) region to address the city's growing traffic congestion. He described Pune as one of the fastest-growing cities in the country, underlining the need for large-scale infrastructure to match its pace of urbanisation.

The current numbers tell their own story. At present, about 33 km of metro network is operational in Pune. Work on a 23-km metro corridor being implemented under a public-private partnership (PPP) model with the Tata Group is in its final stage, with a 12-km stretch expected to open in May and the remaining 11-km section likely to start operations in July. With these additions, Pune's operational metro network will expand to around 56 km.

Beyond this immediate addition, the CM laid out a much larger roadmap. Construction of another 55 kilometres of metro corridors across various parts of Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad is underway on a war footing, while the government has also planned an additional 80 kilometres of routes for the future, aiming to create a total metro network of 200 kilometres. Rather than treating this as a series of disconnected phases, Fadnavis directed metro authorities to move away from phase-wise planning and prepare a comprehensive integrated metro plan for Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad and surrounding areas.

Future connectivity ambitions don't stop at the city's current boundaries. CM Fadnavis said the state government planned to extend the metro network to the proposed Purandar airport, adding that the connectivity will "benefit the city." Authorities are also exploring future metro links to Pune Airport and the Chakan MIDC industrial zone, which are expected to significantly improve accessibility to major employment hubs. This signals that the metro map of tomorrow could stretch well into the industrial and aviation corridors that are already drawing residential demand.

Ridership numbers back up the urgency behind this expansion. Currently, around 2.5 lakh commuters use the metro daily, which proves that the citizens of Pune have accepted the Metro service and they have started using it regularly. Interestingly, usage spikes during festive periods have been even more dramatic — during the Ganeshotsav period, the number reached nearly 5.75 lakh, indicating the growing preference for metro travel among residents.

The pace of execution is also expected to quicken. Officials have been directed to accelerate project execution to meet the expanded target, aiming to complete work in three years instead of five, aligning with global standards. On funding, the CM was equally direct: he directed the Metro authorities and the Urban Development Department to prepare a detailed plan and DPRs for the entire network at the earliest, assuring that the state government will provide the necessary funding.

For homebuyers, this is more than an infrastructure headline — it's a locational signal. Areas along under-construction and proposed corridors, including stretches connecting Hinjewadi, Shivajinagar, and the outer PMRDA belt, are likely to see faster appreciation as connectivity firms up. Developers with an early presence near these corridors, including Birla Estates' riverside project in Sangamwadi close to existing metro stations, stand to benefit from the halo effect that transit-oriented development typically brings. As DPRs are finalised over the coming months, prospective buyers would do well to track official corridor alignments before committing to a locality purely on the promise of "upcoming metro connectivity."
