IndiGo's First Flight Lands at Noida International Airport

On 15 June 2026, Noida International Airport (NIA) at Jewar moved from construction milestone to living reality. IndiGo, India's preferred airline, commenced flight operations from the recently inaugurated Noida International Airport in Jewar, Uttar Pradesh, becoming the first airline to operate from the National Capital Region's newest airport. The first flight arrived at NIA from Lucknow that morning, while the first departure was to Bengaluru shortly thereafter. IndiGo flight 6E-2278 touched down on the NIA runway from Lucknow just before 8 am and was welcomed with a traditional water cannon salute, before the same aircraft operated the airport's first commercial departure to Bengaluru.

The launch didn't happen overnight. The event marked the operationalisation of the National Capital Region's third airport nearly three months after Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated it on March 28. In the days after launch, capacity ramped up quickly. NIA operated 12 daily domestic flights in June, rising to over 40 in July, with IndiGo starting with eight daily flights connecting NIA to Hyderabad, Amritsar, Bengaluru, and Jammu. From July, IndiGo scaled up to 28 daily departures and arrivals, adding destinations including Lucknow, Chandigarh, Dehradun, Bhopal, Jaipur, Jodhpur, Bareilly, Pantnagar, Kishangarh, and Dharamsala. Overall, IndiGo directly connects the airport to over 16 destinations across India, with seamless, one-stop connectivity between 14 city pairs also built into the network.

IndiGo's leadership framed the launch as more than a scheduling exercise. Aloke Singh, Chief Strategy Officer, IndiGo, said opening of the Noida International Airport marks a new chapter in India's aviation story, noting that Delhi NCR now joins a select group of global megacities served by multiple airports, and calling the privilege of being launch carrier at NIA a commitment to western Uttar Pradesh and the broader Delhi NCR.

The government's ambitions for the airport go well beyond passenger counts. Union Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu, who attended the launch, said the government wants to see Noida International Airport grow not only as a transit hub but also as an aerotropolis. He described an integrated ecosystem where manufacturing, IT, hospitality, cargo, MRO services, and agriculture would develop around the airport, generating employment from western Uttar Pradesh to Agra.

Other carriers are close behind. Akasa Air and Air India Express are expected to begin operations soon after IndiGo's launch. International connectivity is still some months away: travelers looking for international destinations will need to wait longer, with international flights projected to begin around September 2026, giving the airport time to stabilize round-the-clock domestic operations first.

For the region's residents, the change in daily life is already visible. With the launch of Noida International Airport services, Delhi NCR now joins a select group of global metropolitan regions supported by multiple operational airports, giving passengers access to three major aviation points: Delhi's primary international airport, Ghaziabad's regional airport, and the newly inaugurated Jewar facility. That shift has direct real-estate consequences for the Yamuna Expressway and Greater Noida belt. Birla Estates' Sector 150 development in Noida marks the company's entry into one of Noida's greenest sectors, lying at the crossroads of the Yamuna Expressway and the Noida-Greater Noida Expressway with easy access to Greater Noida, the Jewar Airport, and Pari Chowk. As flight frequencies climb and international services follow, homebuyers evaluating projects near the expressway corridor now have a functioning airport, not just a promise on a map, to factor into their decision.
